Lancashire County Council

The Archaeology Service of Lancashire County Council is a Specialist Advisory Service within the LA21, Renewal and Information Group. This is part of the Planning Service, which is a sub-group of the Environment Directorate - the body also responsible for Lancashire’s Highways, Transportation and Waste Disposal Services.

The Archaeology Service performs a number of functions including the provision of archaeological information and advice to developers and archaeological contractors, the maintenance and enhancement of the county’s Sites and Monuments Record (SMR), which contains over 20,000 records relating to the historic environment, and the development of planning policy for the conservation and management of archaeology and the built heritage.
