Roman Period c 100 AD

By the Roman period there has been large-scale tree clearance, the accumulation of peat has continued and the fells are now bare. From this time it is possible to see how the modern landscape began to take shape, with farmsteads scattered throughout the area and small, regular fields with laid hedges and dry stone walls, used to grow cereals and hold livestock. Sheep are now domesticated and in the foreground the seated figure is watching over the flock.
